Materials and manufacturing provide significant opportunities to make real economic, environmental and societal differences and shape societies across the globe
Materials & Manufacturing
Strategic Advisor
Simon is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Materials Department at Loughborough University. He obtained his PhD from The University of Sheffield, Department of Engineering Materials. He held a postdoctoral appointment at Oxford University working on Al-Li alloys for airframe applications. The focus of his research is on the use of advanced processing and characterisation techniques to understand microstructural development and properties in complex, novel alloys. Presently, the focus of research includes the effects of laser surface remelting in high strength nano-structured alloys, microstructure and texture development in industrially processed light alloys and the used of increased recycled content for more sustainable metals. As well as holding a Strategic Advisor position, he is a member of the leadership team for the IOM3 Nonferrous and Light Metals Group and Past President and current Treasurer for the East Midlands Materials Society.
Simon oversees the Materials Characterisation and Properties Group and the Materials Processing and Manufacturing Group.
Materials and manufacturing provide significant opportunities to make a real economic, environmental and societal differences and shape societies across the globe. Materials and manufacturing play a vital role in the economies through driving innovation, exports, job creation, productivity and growth. They have a huge central role to play in the drive towards decarbonisation and meeting climate change targets, adopting new technologies and adapting to changing customer demands. Materials and manufacturing provide society with the opportunities to transform, becoming more sustainable and to develop and adopt new material applications to help meet the climate challenge. There will be a need to boost sustainable manufacturing capacity at a global level as we strive towards net-zero.
