Lochaline Quartz Sand Mine

The Mining Institute of Scotland (MIS) are pleased to announce their October meeting which will be delivered by Dario Coragliotto, the Mine Manager at Lochaline Quartz Sand Limited, who will discuss mining in the Scottish Highlands at the only underground silica mine in Europe.

Abstract
Lochaline Mine is located on the Morvern peninsula in the Scottish Highlands and is the only underground silica sand mine in Europe. The mine opened during the 1940s and produces high quality silica sand, primarily for the glass industry. Dario will provide an overview of the geology of the mine and describe the underground mining operations. He will also cover the processing required for the sandstone, prior to transport by ship to market.    

Biography
Dario Coragliotto has worked at Lochaline Mine since 2017, initially as Deputy Mine Manager and then Mine Manager from 2019. He had previously worked in a talc mine in Italy, and in environmental monitoring and health safety and sectors.
