Introduction
Manufacturers and producers are always coming up with new ways of packaging their products to make them more attractive to new audiences and increase their sales.
Walking around a supermarket it is possible to find 5 or 6 different types of packaging for the essentially the same product.
Each of these types of packaging will have its own advantages and disadvantages and be aimed at a particular market, for example families, young people, busy professionals.
The Brief
We are all encouraged to keep hydrated by drinking water throughout the day and it is very easy to forget to pick up your reusable bottle.
Find as many types of packaging you can that are available to purchase water and investigate the pros and cons of each.
Points to consider
- What is the target audience of the pack?
- Is it designed to be a basic, standard or premium product and what suggests this?
- Can the packs be opened and closed again?
- Can the packs be reused or are they specifically designed to be for single use?
Materials to be used

What properties are required of the pack materials to contain the water safely?

What materials have been used to make each of the packs?

What forming processes have been used to make them?

How many materials are used in each pack and how easy is it to separate and recycle them at the end of life?
Submission Requirements
Online registration must include upload of the developments boards and photographic evidence of the final model.
- An A3 poster
- A 3 minute video
- Two A3 boards
- A written report
- A 5 minute video
Individual students are required to submit the findings of their research as either:
- Three A3 boards
- A written report
In each case the submission must explore in depth all of the aspects of the ‘things to consider’ and ‘materials’ questions posed in the brief, with particular focus on the environmental issues associated with each pack
